Putting Some Pop Back in Your Crop: Alfalfa in Crop Rotations

چکیده

While alfalfa is often recognized as the “Queen of the Forages”, corn may be considered “King of the Crops” and currently ranks as the nation’s largest acreage crop with over 87 million acres. The corn acreage U.S. has continued to increase in recent years for various reasons including greater market demand, a shift towards larger farms that focus on a fewer number of crops, and the development of improved varieties and management practices. According to the U.S. Census of Agriculture, the acreage devoted to corn and soybeans has risen by 64 and 255%, respectively, over the last 30 years, while the land use for alfalfa and pasture has declined by 15 and 28% over the same period. The loss of forages is particular evident in the Midwestern states where acreages of alfalfa and pasture has averaged 67 & 53%, respectively. Despite a shift to “corncentric” agriculture, the use of perennial forage species, such as alfalfa or tall fescue, in crop rotations are vital to the long-term success of grain crop operations.

Geographic Trends in Alfalfa Stand Age and Crops That Follow Alfalfa

To gain perspective on alfalfa-annual crop rotations in the upper Midwest, USDA-National Agricultural Statistics Service cropland data layers and Soil Survey Geographic Database layers were combined for six states (North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin) and seven years (2006-2012). Soil texture and geographic location both significantly affected the length of the ...

Profitability of Various Corn, Soybean, Wheat, and Alfalfa Cropping Systems

Producers are frequently most interested in economic comparisons of various cropping systems. We compared continuous corn (Zea mays L.) and continuous soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] with 2-, 3-, and 5-year rotations, the latter two including wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), using either chisel plow or no-tillage practices. Crop yield and returns to land and manag...

Lessons from the Carberry Potato Rotation Study

Rapid expansion of the processing potato industry has contributed to a significant increase in irrigated potato production in Manitoba. However, information is lacking regarding optimum rotations for local conditions. In 1998, a crop rotation study was initiated on a Wellwood silt loam near Carberry to identify crop rotations that optimized crop yield and quality while maintaining soil quality....

Increasing Crop Diversity Mitigates Weather Variations and Improves Yield Stability

Cropping sequence diversification provides a systems approach to reduce yield variations and improve resilience to multiple environmental stresses. Yield advantages of more diverse crop rotations and their synergistic effects with reduced tillage are well documented, but few studies have quantified the impact of these management practices on yields and their stability when soil moisture is limi...

An economic-risk analysis of alternative rotations by stochastic simulation in Fars province

ABSTRACT - Cultivation of legumes in crop rotations results in atmosphere nitrogen fixation. After harvesting, part of this external nitrogen remains in soil and is used by subsequent crops. This implies that producers would gain from lowering the amount of nitrogen fertilizer in their fields. In this study, stochastic simulation is used to generate probability distributions of net present valu...
